The Yard, Ilkley

If there’s anywhere I’d want to eat, it’s somewhere where I can’t handle the size of a burger. You know, one of those overwhelmingly crazy stacked patties, all enclosed in a squishy bun.

And I think I may have found my challenger, The Yard. Ilkley based, this bar and restaurant is situated in the town central, several minutes’ walk from the train station. The stone building oozes character, traditional and familiar from the outside, with a creative warming twist within. From its back wall mural featuring all the Yorkshire slang you need, to fairy lights, candles, and comfy couches.

As for a strapline, if any restaurant goes with the likes of ‘burgers, bird & beer’, then a place in my heart they shall have.

With a proper Yorkshire welcome, we were greeted and seated, and ordered our drinks. A real ale for Nathan, and a rather pretty Chambord Royale for myself. The food menu was lip-smacking, everything sounded darn good, so good, that we had to rely on recommendations to make our very final decision on food choices.

Starting with a nacho sharer, we opted for the ‘Fowl Play’, loaded pulled sticky chicken nachos with garlic mayonnaise. It was as divine as it sounds. The chicken was clucking (sorry!) fabulous. Upon our praise, it was explained how the chicken was roasted before being shredded, which adds to the flavour.

To refuel, I ordered a special summery cocktail, one completely made up. I shall call it the strawberry and cucumber surprise.  Tasty.Shortly after, the mains arrived.

With burgers too big to bite, with toppings and sauces to fill your hearts content, we were in for a treat.

To have the best of both worlds, we ordered both a chicken and beef burger.First up, the Wafflin’ On. What we thought was a chicken breast served on a buttered waffle with gooey cheese and chilli maple bacon, completely took us by surprise when all this was served within a bun.

Oh boy. What a stack that was, and the flavour was spot on, sweetness from the syrupy waffle with chargrilled chicken.   Onto the beef burger, we selected the Smoke Shack, juicy minced beef patty with double streaky smoked bacon, cheese and house relish. Nothing too crazy, but the flavours were divine.

With this burger, you could really appreciate the burger for what it was and the quality of great meat. The burgers were genuinely spectacular, each having their own specialities. This is something I really enjoyed about the menu.

There was plenty of choice, but not too much, where you could opt for a burger of madness as well as the modest sounding one that packed a punch also in taste.

Accompanying the burgers, was of course loaded chips. Hot to Trot was the lethal combination of fries, pulled pork, jalapenos and cajun salt. Whaddup! Slightly spicy and ever so moreish, and if we’re onto a meat feast, why not continue with the chips, right?

Brought out were also the Baked Fries, again, another loaded side dish that tasted as good as it sounded. Gooey cheese, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos. And now I just need a minute or two to truly honour the memories of these bites.

A dessert you ask? Oh no, not necessary. Our bellies were as round as round could be, full of burger, birds and beer.

And there you have it, another place on my list of favourite burger places. And should Ilkley be on the cards for a next visit, stop by, enjoy a drink and definitely have a bite or two.Cheers!

And I really love a good brew. If I'm not busy writing, I'll either be eating, sipping a cocktail, hiking or convincing my boyfriend we need another cat.
