‘Come hungry, leave happy’ is the motto that the Falafel Guys go by, and a triumphant one at that.

For sure, if I eat out, I desire my appetite to be satisfied and that I feel wonderful about it too. Full and happy.

Having been serving up Middle Eastern food in Leeds for some years now, you’ll definitely have seen their red food truck parked up on Briggate, but now, taking on a new venture, you can find the team serving up good nosh in Assembly Underground. And if Assembly Underground doesn’t seem to ring a bell to you yet, it will soon. Having recently opened up on Great George Street, what you can except here is a food and drinks venue serving up 50 taps of beers and ciders and collaborating with independent food traders.

The place has a real buzz to it, relaxed and atmospheric, a communal space full of chatter and wondering eyes (only to scout out what the next pint to order shall be). Exposed brick walls, neon lights, trestle tables and benches, it’s industrial and trendy. The venue is family and dog friendly, huge bonus, and for those looking for vegan and gluten-free options, are also catered for.

The Falafel Guys are one of the five traders taking residence underground, serving up shawarmas, salad bowls and nibbles to hungry visitors.

May I also add, these guys are ranked number one on TripAdvisor for Leeds restaurants. What a brilliant statement that is… and having recently feasted on their shawarma, it’s no surprise at all.Going in, all guns blazing, we went for the triple shawarma – chicken, falafel and halloumi. What a treat that is, served alongside homemade beetroot hummus, fresh salad, and their special (and secret) tahini sauce. In the mix is one green jalapeno pepper for an extra kick.

Packed with fine middle eastern flavours, the crispy falafels were perfectly seasoned and provided contrasting textures to the soft wrap. The grilled halloumi was salty and squishy, and the chicken tender and juicy. And for good measures, and because we love cheese, we had a side of halloumi chips, that came with extra spice seasoning and a squeeze of the tahini sauce. Delightful.

Both shawarmas and sides were polished off nicely, accompanied by a beautiful mango cider (which worked perfectly well with my meal).

Falafel Guy’s motto of arriving hungry and leaving happier could not have been any more accurate, and what I’m very much looking forward to is our next visit.

Lots of love,

PS. I was invited by the Falafel Guys to come and taste test their food. All views are 100% my own.
